If you're looking for the perfect holiday gifts for your family and friends, why not give them the gift of video games? By now everyone's got a console or two, but with so many titles vying for your cash, it's hard to determine what's cool and what's crap. StreetLevel did the hard work for you and made up your video game shopping list. (You're welcome.)
For Your Homies: "Left 4 Dead 2" (PC, Xbox 360)If the zombie apocalypse really happened, like World War Z-style, think about who'd you want with you. Your buddies, right? Get them prepped to fight the undead with this four-player cooperative and competitive multiplayer game. The sequel to last year's hit zombie shooter adds an array of new weapons as well as the ability to melee with handy items such as a katana, frying pan or cricket bat. George Romero, eat your brains out. $60.
For Your Girl: "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" (Wii)If your girlfriend hasn't played a video game since "Super Mario Bros. 3" on the NES, it's all good. Now there's "New Super Mario Bros. Wii," which brings back the Italian plumber to his 2D side-scrolling roots in an all-new game. And no more passing the controller either, because up to four people can play together at the same time while collecting coins, jumping their way through every level and attempting to save the princess (natch). It's Mario as we remembered him, but even better. $50.
For Your Mom: "Wii Fit Plus" (Wii)If your mom wants some kind of exercising machine, we say skip the stairmaster and go with the "Wii Fit Plus." It comes with the "Wii Fit" balance board, a device that measures her weight, BMI and balance. The game will also show her how to do various aerobic, strength and yoga exercises as well as keep track of her fitness progress. And you'll be getting her something to keep her fit and trick her into playing a video game. $90 with board; $20 for game only.
For Your Dad: "The Beatles: Rock Band" (PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360)Let's face it: Most music-loving dads were probably into the biggest band in rock history. So let Pops rock out on fake instruments to his favorite Beatles' jams while also getting extra fan service like never-before-seen photos and studio session cuts. Plus, the whole family can even join in on the fun: The game lets up to six players play with the added three-part harmonies, just as long as you have the additional mics. $60 - $250 (depending on instruments).
For Your Little Brother: "Tony Hawk RIDE" (PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360)Get the little guy into the skateboarding legend you grew up with and teach him how to skate. The newest Tony Hawk game comes with a skateboard-shaped controller that lets players perform ollies, grinds, manuals and other tricks in the safety of their own homes (well, homes without coffee tables). And the game and board isn't a one-time investment: The developers are working on other titles that will soon be compatible with the skateboard controller. $120.
For Your Little Sister: "Band Hero" (DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360) If your little sis ain't into The Who or The Beatles or other standard "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero" tunes, there's always "Band Hero." It plays a lot like Guitar Hero's full-band game but it includes more pop-friendly fare like Taylor Swift, Jesse McCartney and Aly & AJ. You may not know or care who those folks are, but we're betting your little sister does. $40 - $200 (depending on instruments).
For Your Big Brother: "DJ Hero" (PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360)If you're big bro is into the "Guitar Hero" games and hip-hop, then "DJ Hero" is a must-get. The game comes with a turntable controller and lets players spin beats to tracks from Jay-Z, Eminem, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Shadow and Daft Punk, to name a few. And if you've got another turntable or a guitar, it can turn into a competitive or co-op experience in your living room. And if you really want to spoil your bro, you can score the Jay-Z and Eminem-sanctioned "Renegade" edition, which comes with a DJ stand and a travel case. $100 - $200.
For Your Big Sister: "Scene It? Twilight" (Wii) Is your sister on Team Edward or Team Jacob? Before you answer that, just snag her a copy of "Scene It? Twilight," a trivia game based on the hit vampire movie franchise that includes movie clips and puzzles. It'll keep her occupied and also test how much she knows about "Twilight" -- so you don't have to know who the hell Edward and Jacob even are. $50.
For The Gamer Who Already Has Everything: "God of War" Collection (PlayStation 3) Your gamer geek pal has no doubt played the classic "God of War " and "God of War 2" for the PlayStation 2. But now Sony's re-released and re-mastered both games in HD on Blu-ray disc for the PlayStation 3, so your pal can experience the over-the-top bloodshed in glorious high-definition. $40.
For Yourself: A GameFly SubscriptionIt's like Netflix for video games. There are a few different plans offered but for $23 a month, you can rent up to two games at a time via snail mail. So you can try before you buy, and get yourself all of the games mentioned above. Win.
